The Sail Parry Sound Racing Team is a competitive sports team reflecting Sail Parry Sound’s continued focus on training excellence.
The school encourages participation from all advanced sailors at Sail Parry Sound Sailing School, for the love of the sport and with the objective of increasing knowledge of competitive sailing in the Parry Sound area and Ontario at large. Every sailor is chosen for the team, not only on the basis of skill, but also for his or her maturity.
Each summer, competitive coed teams from Sail Parry Sound Sailing School, in the Ontario Sailing district of Sail Canada, are travelling around the province to race in regattas.
It is important to note that the race team is not restricted to more advanced level sailors. These levels are associated with a higher degree of sailing and knowledge of racing, but racing is not reserved for only these sailors.
Typically race team participants are older students, better adapted to the challenges of long days on the water and being away from home and family.
While travelling to compete in regattas, the team sets high standards for itself, representing not only Sail Parry Sound, but also the coach, their families and the community of Parry Sound in a mature and responsible manner.
What is a regatta?
A regatta is a series of races.
Although regattas are typically amateur competitions, they are structured events, with comprehensive rules describing the schedule and procedures of the event.
Regattas may be organized as championships for a particular area or type of boat such as the 420 and Laser, but are often held just for the joy of competition, camaraderie, and general development of the sport.
Sailing race events usually last more than one day, with a social schedule for the competitors and families or guests. Regattas may be hosted by a yacht club, sailing association, or even a community or some other organization.
Regattas are chosen in advance for the Sail Parry Sound Race Team’s travel plans; a schedule is distributed at the beginning of the season, with other details of the arrangements. Volunteered parental support is essential to the success of the team.
